The Detour IE is one of the most affordable mid drive e-bikes featuring the excellent Steps system. Shimano has delivered the most compact, lightest weight e-bike drive systems on the market - it relies on a combination of torque and cadence sensing, and it's quiet! Usually rear rack mounted batteries can affect how the bike handles, but because the battery is so light, it is barely noticeable.
The Detour checks a lot of boxes for the price - it comes in both step thru and diamond frame - colors are either black or light blue.
Entry level Steps E6000 is lighter and more affordable than Brose or Bosch, and the performance is no slouch compared to the most common 20mph city oriented motor, the Bosch Active line. Like Bosch, they use a proprietary battery along with their motors. Batteries for City systems are externally mounted on the back rack or frame mounted on the downtube, and on the small side at 400 watt hours. Overall the system is less bulky and lighter - and price ranges of 2-3k they lead the industry for value in a mid drive.
Hydraulic disc brakes will have the most stopping power in any weather conditions, and are standard equipment on most eBIkes because of the added weight and speed on an electric bike. Not all disc brakes are created equally - the size and quality of the disc (or rotor), as well as the quality of the pad material can have a significant impact on braking performance.
The norm for most bikes, with great ratio range, lots of low speed torque as well as top end gears for high speeds, and easy access to service and change flats. A more dynamic, snappier shifting performance. For eBikes shifting over the entire range when the bike is at rest can be a problem, a challenge less active cyclists face at first. They can get your trousers dirty if you aren't careful. Good quality gears can last with frequent maintenance, but will wear out faster than internal gears and belt drives.
